The Old Sugar Mills & Plantations of PR, Part 2
As mentioned in my last post, the area in South East PR was home to the last Sugarcane haciendas (plantations) and sugar mills. This is evident by the numerous red brick structures still standing from its distant past.
Guayama was the epicenter of this climatic chapter in Puerto Rico’s history.
Guayama as a settlement dates to before its founding in 1736 and boasted no less than 200 houses, a church and plaza by 1776. Guayama was also involved in the Spanish American War of 1898. Coamo… Last Stop of a New Adventure
I spent a lot of time in and around Coamo checking out the local situation, scoring a “cheap” ride and getting a sense of what Puerto Rico was really like. Sure, I got stuck while trying to buy a car. I’ve already explained all that.
However, I never “felt” like I was stuck anywhere.
The Coamo Plaza and local museum is very similar to other small PR towns. That’s to say, it was very pristine, very charming. Something the locals can be proud of and I’m sure they are. Puerto Rican Eats..
One of the things I wanted to check out was foods unique to PR. Admittedly, being in San Juan is not the way to do it. So to that end, I offer the following.
Caribbean Munchies:
Caribas brand chips are made from produce popular to the Caribbean basin. They were wedged into the potato and corn chip aisle. They were new to me. The 3 I tried were made from Yuca, green Plantains and yellow Plantains. Yuka chips- the text on the bag was entirely in Spanish, but the illustration is of a large root sliced thin and fried like potato chips They do have the texture of a potato chip, but with their own unique flavor.
