Arroyo, PR… ‘Pueblo Grato’ (Grateful Town)

The Old Sugar Mills & Plantations of PR, Part 3

As mentioned in my 2 previous posts, the area in South East PR was home to the last Sugarcane haciendas (plantations) and sugar mills.

Welcome to Arroyo Sign in Puerto RicoIf Guayama was the epicenter of this climatic chapter in PR’s history, then Arroyo was its ‘port of call’ on the coast. The commercial port at Aguirre Central did not come into being until the early 1930’s.

The ‘Welcome to Arroyo’ sign is a sculpture commemorating buccaneers of the sea and days gone by.

Profiteering & smuggling were very much a part of its past!

As per the last post, we were there on a Thursday. It was hot and humid but there… Continue reading

The Dog’s Blog 1st Anniversary & Slide Show!

Its been a year since this blog went public. In that time, I’ve put up 60+ posts, a dozen YouTube videos and one QuickTime VR Panorama. The first 14 posts were from Alaska. My way of introducing myself. Back then, I had no clue I would be moving to PR. It was just a thought.

So I’m taking the opportunity to pause and reflect.

Black Friday, Puerto Rico Style!

Or how I survived the 6AM Crush at Walmart

I had planned to score a new TV, once I got back to PR. I figured “Black Friday” would be the best time to do it. I got to the Walmart near Coamo, right at 6AM. I’ve been to this particular Walmart about a half a dozen times and I have NEVER seen it as packed as it was on Friday morning.

An 'FLS' Funny Looking Spider on the Back Poarch in Coamo, Puerto Rico

Parking was just short of impossible and they have your typical oversize Walmart parking lot (with lots of security running around). I did miss the 2AM to 6AM feeding frenzy, but the aftermath was still present… they were just starting to tear down the… Continue reading
