Note: This is my Original Itinerary Map which has been updated in 2010.
Over the course of last winter, I read these travel guides. This is not an inclusive list. They were cheap and newly published. Of the Three, my favorite is…
‘Off the Beaten Path Puerto Rico’ was pretty good too. I would buy both again. My trip was planned around the pair.
However, ‘Fodor’s Puerto Rico’ only briefly mentions the Tren Urbano mass transit system in San Juan… one paragraph on page 95. As if it was an after thought. It makes me wonder just how current the rest of it is. I do want to qualify, I’m not finished reading it.
There is one other PR travel guide I would have read, but ran out of time, ‘Lonely Planet Puerto Rico’. It was published in 2008. The Lonely Planet series came highly recommended by a close friend for folks on a budget like me.
Update: I did finish reading the Fodor’s guide while on the last leg of my flight into San Juan. I had the good fortune of meeting a resident of Puerto Rico… she drew issue with several other references (which I did note directly in the book). I plan to verify them before I pass judgement.
Greetings! It seems only proper that I should introduce myself to give you some context about this humble blog. I can’t really meet everyone who visits, but at least you should know who you are visiting, who put this stuff online. Welcome to the Scurvy Dog’s blog about my adventures in Puerto Rico. I come in peace, mostly but have low tolerance for abusive rogues or predators.
What a learning curve….
My first (ever) edited video and the only one I’ll do with me in front of the camera. Shot with the Vado HD video camera. This sequence was staged next to an old dilapidated shed near my place in Willow, Alaska. HD Videos make such huge files. This minute and a half was originally over 560 MBs. I did manage to compress it to 65 MBs before uploading to YouTube. It still took 30 minutes to up-load over my DSL. Enjoy, Roberto
Because of the huge amount of time lost to post processing HD video, I will only be posting a few while I’m IN Puerto Rico. Once I get back, I’ll prepare and post up more. Most of my posts ‘from the road’ will include still images, underwater images and a few special time-lapse videos. I will also prepare a multi-media composite video of my trip to Puerto Rico, on my return to Alaska. The video was edited with FinalCut Express v4, on a MacBook Pro.
This Blog site has matured quite nicely. I’ll be able to post up the YouTube Introduction I shot of myself (back on July 12th), in a few more days
I simply had to learn how to use FinalCut Express
before I could edit any of it. No biggie.
Also, I invite anyone and everyone to leave comments. It is filtered so really nasty, dirty words will kill your post. I hope to see your comments soon!
Its also worth mentioning that as I post here, I will make a distinction between the facts I find on the ground, the info I collect off the Net and when I may state an opinion on something. I will have opinions… you can bank on that. But I promise to keep them to a minimum. Every effort will be made to quote sources when ever possible.
If I do fabricate something, you’ll be the first to know.
The PR Detours Category is reserved for any side-trips or changes I may make to my ‘planned’ route. A few of you may have noticed, I did not include any of the smaller key PR islands- Culebra, Vieques, Mona or little Desecheo on my map. I do not expect to have time to visit these outer islands on this first trip, but if I do, they will show up here. I do hope to update my map with the addition of these popular islands at some point.
Detours will also be the home of any strange or weird things I come across in my journey around the island. That would include UFOs, old myths of PR, secret military activity and anything I discover about the Bermuda Triangle. All of these subjects have come up in my research about Puerto Rico. What’s more, I’m not apposed to “faking a few things along the way”, just for fun!
July 2011 Update- Me Scurvy Map did get updated to include towns left out of the Mountain Central Region as well as the 4 key Outer Islands of Puerto Rico. As new articles about places in PR are added, they will have a link to a simple Pop-Up Map showing where they are. Also, ‘Weird and Strange’ is now Listed in the Side Bar under Roberto’s X-files. A new Category will be added for the Outer Islands when I get around to visiting them and any place outside PR will be listed under the Off the Charts Category.
So sez The Scurvy Dog, Arrg…
